From antiheroes, gods and ancestral warriors to legendary shamans, mythical animals and everyday beings, Apitatán’s motifs play an important role in passing on his country’s valuable local memories. They appear continuously in his work as cartoon-like figures in a way that challenges stereotypical aesthetics and confirms the beauty and value of their imperfection.
In Ayahuasca, the shaman drinking the hallucinogenic beverage with the same name, is the artist’s personal experience. When he first tried ayahuasca, Apitatán visualized his essence as a cat with huge teeth. Simultaneously, he felt connected with spirits from the jungle and wondered what our world was like before there were borders separating us.
