The invisible eyeball

Spray paint on polyester

Provoking interaction through shapes is characteristic of David Shillinglaw’s work. While his street interventions are essentially playful conversations with the surrounding environment and its passersby, the shapes and symbols on his canvases leave room for deeper thought. Throughout his body of work, the artist is continuously in debate with the human condition. Structured as a board game, or movie storyboard, The Invisible Eyeball follows a sequence of symbols, some of them figurative and easily recognizable to the average human being, some more abstract, ambiguous and open to interpretation. Many of the shapes in this painting reoccur in David’s other work and function as his trademark.
