Gleo
(Colombia)Sinister Hand
( 2017 )now on view
Gleo focuses many eyes – quite literally – on her country Colombia. Using references of animals and pre-colonial art, she portrays surreal entities with unique sets of (extra) eyes. Gleo’s work reflects the broad heritage of her country and its ancestral cultural elements – from tattoos, masks and crowns to trance eyes and shamans. These particular heritage symbols appeal to her because they represent power and wisdom not only in Colombia and across Latin America, but also in most ancient cultures around the world.
“The hand builds, destroys, sows, creates, curses and blesses. This piece revolves around seven characters that symbolize fire, the element that overcomes darkness and cold, which represents change, purification, and sacrifice. It talks about dream beings guarding ancestral wisdom, reminding us that the divine has infinite forms.” / Gleo
