Perpetual lozenge

Spray paint, paint markers and ink marker on polyester

now on view

Fusing calligraphy and dynamic shapes, Astro distorts the flatness of 2D surfaces. While strongly rooted in hip-hop, Astro’s compositions are also inspired by the gestural abstraction of Hans Hartung, the non-representational paintings of Zao Wou-Ki, the optical art of Victor Vasarely and the art nouveau of Alphonse Mucha. For his optical artwork Perpetual Lozenge, Astro plays with shadows, light and perspective. The illusion of a portal invites the viewer to enter the image to discover what is hidden in its depths.

“I want my work to create an illusion. You should be able to get lost in it, to feel like you’re being sucked into it.” / Astro
