Accessibility at STRAAT Museum

We want as many people as possible to enjoy a comfortable and well-prepared visit to STRAAT Museum. This page explains which facilities are available, which areas of the museum are less accessible, and what you may need to take into account during your visit.

Getting here and arrival

STRAAT Museum is located at NDSM-Plein 1 in Amsterdam-Noord. A free ferry runs from behind Amsterdam Central Station to the NDSM wharf. The museum is approximately a three-minute walk from the ferry. The Klaprozenweg bus stop is approximately a five-minute walk away.

Paid parking applies throughout the area. There is one designated accessible parking space on NDSM-straat, where you may park for a maximum of three hours. It is less than 50 metres from the museum. Visitors can be dropped off and picked up in front of the main entrance; the entrance is approximately 10 metres from the drop-off point.

The museum can be entered through the main entrance or, when needed, through the group entrance. The group entrance is reached via a ramp, has a clear width of 200 cm, and is opened manually by a member of staff. The floors in and around the museum are uneven.

Visitors with mobility impairments

The visitor route is not fully step-free. Metal strips run across parts of the museum floor. These form clear obstacles along the route and may make using a wheelchair more difficult or less comfortable. The strips cannot be removed because of the building’s protected heritage status. The narrowest passage on the visitor route is 100 cm wide.

The museum has two lifts. The lift in the museum shop provides access to the Mezzanine Space and the second floor of STRAAT Café. The lift door is 90 cm wide, the cabin measures 100 × 155 cm, and the controls are positioned at a height of 85 cm. A second lift provides access to the education room. The panoramic deck and the meeting room are not accessible to wheelchair users.

Seating is available throughout the museum, and some seats have armrests and backrests. Portable stools are not currently available. Activities with fixed seating offer at least five wheelchair spaces, each with room for one companion. Accessible toilet and café

An accessible toilet is located on the ground floor. The entrance is 100 cm wide, the turning space measures 2 metres, and there is 100 cm of clear space beside the toilet. The toilet has support rails, a low washbasin, and an emergency pull cord. The step-free route to the toilet includes a ramp.

STRAAT Café is located on the second and third floors. The second floor can be reached by the lift in the museum shop. A museum ticket is required to access the café. The counter is accessible to wheelchair users, and tables provide sufficient clear space. Staff can help carry your order if needed.

Blind and partially sighted visitors

Officially trained assistance dogs are welcome. There are no tactile guide paths from the entrance, and tactile, spoken, or digital indoor navigation is not available. You can ask at the ticket desk for information about the different routes. When available, a member of staff can guide you to the reception desk or another area.

STRAAT offers a free audio tour in Dutch and English. You use your own phone and scan a QR code at the entrance to the exhibition hall. We recommend bringing your own headphones or earbuds. The audio tour does not include audio description, and audio description is not available for videos or other presentations.

Visitor information in large print and braille is not currently available. Artworks may not be touched, and tactile materials or reproductions are not available.

Deaf and hard of hearing visitors

All audiovisual presentations are fully subtitled in English. The museum does not have a fixed or portable hearing loop, and vibrating vests are not available.

A guided tour with a sign language interpreter or in sign language is not available as standard, but can be arranged through an external provider. Please submit your request at least two months in advance via events@straatmuseum.com. Options depend on the external provider, and prices are available on request.

Sensory stimuli and quieter visiting times

Bright lighting, moving images, and loud or unexpected sounds may vary by room, presentation, and event. STRAAT does not use flashing lights or strobe effects. Background music or amplified sound can be heard in the café, museum shop, and exhibition spaces. Sound levels may be higher during events and busy periods.

There are currently no dedicated low-stimulus opening hours and no separate low-stimulus or quiet room. Because STRAAT is a large museum, a regular visit may still be suitable for visitors who are sensitive to sensory stimuli. This depends on how busy the museum is. Contact us in advance to discuss a suitable time for your visit.
